2025 Earth Day with Fort Greene Tennis

2025 Earth Day with Fort Greene Tennis

For Earth Day this year, we made it out to Fort Greene Park’s tennis courts for some beginning of the season clean-up. A group of about 8 of us helped get the courts ready, repairing and hanging the court windscreens and signs; cleaning out, organizing and painting the shed; and replacing the shed floor (in good ol’ NYC fashion, it had rats living in it).  Check out some of the images from the day (minus any rats) here and on our social accounts.

What else are we doing in our tennis life?  We’re exclusively using recycled string (Luxilon Eco Spin is our preferred string right now) and continue to look for more sustainable grip options (we haven’t found one yet but drop us any suggestions if you have a good one). We also make sure to re-use and recycle our tennis balls and cans – many facilities have onsite ball recycling so make sure to use that when available (or you can order a RecycleBalls or TerraCycle box for home). Another easy change – no single use plastic water or sports drinks.  Bring your own water bottle and use one of the many electrolyte mixers out there (we use nuun Sport and LMNT, and take separate magnesium supplements when needed).  Alternatively you can mix your own electrolyte drink, but we tried that and it did not go well.

And for Sigrún, we continued to make progress in sustainability so you have the best better-for-the-environment performance tennis options. Some of our accomplishments this year include:

  • We exclusively used recycled synthetics (polyester, nylon, etc.)
    • 89% of synthetic fabric content used for our planned 2025 production is recycled, an improvement vs. 2024 (88%)
    • All of our new styles/fabrics in development are made from primarily recycled synthetic or natural materials
    • Working on finding recycled alternatives to spandex
    • We exclusively use better, premium natural fibers
  • All new natural fiber-based fabric production for our apparel is SUPIMA® cotton
    • In 2024, we released new accessories in recycled cotton blends (socks and wristbands)
    • Developing new tennis accessories in organic, more sustainable materials
    • Working on bio-based materials for non-synthetic performance options (Rocky trained in cotton, so it must be good)
    • Working towards selling a higher percentage of our sales in natural/bio-based fiber instead of synthetic fiber
  • All fabrics we use are from OEKO-TEX® certified mills
    • Most fabric suppliers are also bluesign® and have sustainability commitments
    • Anti-odor/bacterial solutions and non-PFC waterproofing extend product life (without use of PFAS)
  • All polybags made from bio-based compostable material and mailers from 100% recycled kraft paper (90% post-consumer fiber) – the current best of for packaging
  • 2ndServ continues to be a circularity option that we offer – although we generally recommend donating or recycling used clothing locally if available

We also continue to have a process of sustainability improvement, are focused on reducing our excess stock purchasing, and are looking into quality, local supply chain options to reduce our footprint. And while the recent tariff proposals and policies have made it difficult for us to continue to make progress on some of these (and quite frankly, make it difficult for brands like us to even exist), at the end of the day, it may ultimately be a good thing to reduce our consumption, especially of cheap synthetic/plastic-based products.

Check out some of our prior sustainability updates for more information and feel free to reach out with any questions or suggestions.
